How charitable tax relief actually works
Most countries reward charitable giving with a tax break, but the mechanism varies wildly. UK Gift Aid is unique in that it benefits the charity as well as you: HMRC tops the charity’s receipt up by 25% on top of your donation, and if you pay higher- or additional-rate tax, you claim the extra back yourself through self-assessment.
The US only rewards itemisers — most filers take the $15,750 (single, 2025) standard deduction and get nothing for their giving. Canada and Spain use tiered tax credits. France hands out a 66% réduction d’impôt (75% for “Coluche” charities supporting people in real hardship). India only lets you claim Section 80G under the old tax regime. The Netherlands rewards a 5-year periodic gift commitment with full deductibility and no threshold — by far the most generous structure in Europe.
These figures are estimates. Tax rules change every year and depend on your personal circumstances — always double-check with your tax authority or a qualified adviser before you act.
